Speech Language Pathology
Innovative Strategies for Communications Disorders
Communication is the foundation for relationship building, and when students can communicate and express themselves, an increase in independence and self-advocacy skills becomes possible. The speech-language pathologists (SLP), therapists and educators at CMS are experts in helping students break through communication barriers and get turned on to learning.
Our SLPs help students express themselves and understand others through therapies and, when appropriate, Augmentative Alternative Communication (AAC) systems – communication other than speech to express thoughts, ideas and needs. They assess each student's physical and cognitive abilities, with therapists and educators, to design a communications program specifically for that student.
Solutions are individualized and could include the following:
- iPads with specialized apps
- Picture Exchange Communications Systems (PECS) - picture and symbol communication boards
- Text and speech-generating devices such as devices from Tobii DynaVox
- Eye-gaze technology
- Supports from our Assistive Technology and Rehabilitation Engineering professionals to fully access their communication solutions
