Student Activities
Extracurricular Activities for Students with Disabilities
The students at Crotched Mountain School always have something to do. During school, after school, evenings and weekends, students have an array of activities to choose from that not only engage and entertain, but also support and advance individual physical, social and academic skills and goals.
What is indeed fun is also healthful – from adaptive dance, drumming circles, physical education and competitive sports to theater arts, festivals and gardening – students’ time after school and on weekends is well spent among friends, family and caring and knowledgeable staff members. Activities are carefully planned and adapted by professionals in the arts, education and recreation so that each student can participate to the fullest extent. Activities are designed to reinforce skills, meet sensory needs, build self-esteem and provide social interaction.
Arts Programs Stimulate Creativity
We offer abundant opportunities for students to explore and express their creativity through the visual and performing arts. Our school play and frequent talent shows bring students together in acting, stage design, costume design and musical experiences. Our Active Ingredients Dance Troupe offers students the opportunity to explore dance and participate in full-scale dance productions. In addition, our Healing Arts and the artist-in-residence programs enrich student life through unique and often dynamic experiences such as drumming circles, kite-making, photography, videography and sculpture.
Therapeutic Recreation Actively Engages Students
With a campus of more than 1,400 acres in the New Hampshire countryside, Crotched Mountain School offers students accessible recreation activities and outdoor learning opportunities found nowhere else. Like the arts, physical activities at any ability level promote confidence and personal growth. Our Certified Therapeutic Recreational Specialists (CTRS/L) specialize in developing and modifying activities to meet each student’s interests and physical skills. Through therapeutic recreation, students can challenge and enjoy themselves in a safe and accessible environment by participating in activities such as:
- Adaptive skiing at a local ski area
- Bowling at our onsite bowling alley
- Therapeutic horseback riding at an equestrian center
- Special Olympics sports
- Swimming at our Aquatics Center
- Water and beach sports at our fully accessible lakefront
Community-Based Activities Create an Enriching Experience
Participating in the greater community is an important part of the experience at Crotched Mountain School. Through community interaction, students forge friendships, build communication and life skills, and reinforce the goals of their individual education plan. A sample of the community-based activities available to students includes:
- Visiting an amusement park
- Enjoying a barbecue
- Getting involved in Boy Scouts or Girl Scouts
- Attending county fairs
- Visiting a museum
- Seeing a play
- Attending a professional baseball or hockey game
- Attending school dances
- Going shopping
- Eating at restaurants
Participating in Religious Services
Crotched Mountain School offers students the opportunity to participate in religious services of different faiths and traditions. Students can attend services held on our campus as well as at local churches. In addition, we support students as they prepare for religious milestones, such as confirmations and bar and bat mitzvahs, by integrating these studies into their school and homework activities, when appropriate.
