The month of October is International Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) Awareness month–and here at Crotched Mountain, AAC is instrumental in giving our students the skils to express themselves and chart a course to greater independence.
Our speech therapy department uses a variety of “tools of the trade” to help students meet their academic, social, and emotional goals. That could be something as high-tech as the Eye Gaze eye-tracking technology (which allows students with severe physical disabilities to move computer cursors with their eyes) or as old school and organic as a simple story board with icons.
Every student is unique and our therapists, staff, and teachers tag-team to find the perfect fit to help unlock their communication needs.
