The Mellon Program at Crotched Mountain School is an intensive residential placement and treatment program designed to promote safety, security, and the well-being of children referred by the New Hampshire Division of Children, Youth, and Families (DCYF). Our goal is to help a child find stability and build healthy, productive, meaningful relationships.

A Transformed Space

Crotched Mountain’s former brain injury unit has been converted into a new residential location where the children from the Mellon Program share life together in a safe, supportive environment. Thanks to renovation and redecoration, patient rooms have been turned into warm, bright children’s bedrooms and common spaces have become social play areas.

Education Around the Corner

The children of the Mellon Program can enroll in Crotched Mountain School, steps away on our gorgeous campus, or attend nearby public schools. Classrooms at Crotched Mountain School are small, designed to foster a close connection between teachers, staff, and students. Learning comes in all shapes and sizes, from traditional academics to hands-on vocational experiences in settings like the Crotched Mountain Farm School.

Therapeutic Support

Crotched Mountain’s highly-skilled team of clinicians works closely with DCYF to develop psychological and behavior treatment strategies to help the children shape and achieve home, life, school, and community goals. The Mellon program integrates educational and residential program goals, as children work on coping skills, how to express themselves safely and appropriately, daily hygiene, keeping their rooms and environment safe and clean, leisure and fitness activities, maintaining appropriate boundaries, increasing personal responsibility and developing social skills.

A World of Discovery

Crotched Mountain School offers an expansive variety of ameneties and activities, giving children the opportunity to try out exciting recreational and social experiences:

  • Full-size indoor swimming pool
  • Private waterfront
  • Gymnasium
  • Hiking trails
  • Accessible bowling alley
  • Media Center and theater
  • RIDGE after school enrichment program
  • Art and music classes
  • Field trips
  • Farm School

Starting a New Chapter

The ultimate goal for all of the children in the Mellon program is a safe and appropriate return to the community. Crotched Mountain School’s clinical and residential team will work alongside DCYF to provide the necessary planning and supports to ensure that the transition process is successful.
